In the middle of the night by Garren Goh

In the middle of the night, Sheila's sister and her were awakened and startled by a strange noise coming from the living room. They were curious and scared.

Sheila jolted out of bed and got a baseball bat. She tiptoed and walked stealthily to the door while her sister was still curled up in bed. She was frightened and was trembling with fear under the comforters.

Sheila glued her ears to the door, trying to identify the noise. She thought to herself, "Please let it be a cat." She then opened the door gently and took a peek.

Sheila's sister was too afraid to stay in bed alone so she jumped out of bed and peered at what was happening, sticking close to her elder sister. Suddenly, a stray cat leaped out of nowhere! The two girls were startled.

Sheila heaved a sigh of relief and said, "Phew! Luckily it was just a cat."

What a fright! By Mabel

One starry night, Sue and her elder sister, Sally, were sleeping soundly in their bed. Suddenly, Sue was awakened by a strange sound coming from outside the room. She immediately woke Sally up. Sally listened closely and heard the sound too. Sue had asked Sally to investigate the source of the weird sound.

Sally bravely got out of their bed and took a baseball bat in her hand. Then, she tiptoed to the door while Sue hid under the blanket. The sound got louder as Sally walked closer to the door.

When Sally got to the door, she was already trembling with fear. She gently turns the doorknob took a peek. To her surprise, there was actually nothing behind it. All Sally could hear was a meowing sound followed by a loud crash!

Sue was too scared to stay in bed alone so she jumped out of bed and stood closely behind Sally. Just then, their cat, Tim, leaped out of nowhere. The girls were startled! "Aaahh!!!"

They then heaved a sigh of relief and giggled knowing then that it was only their cat that had made the strange sound. Tim must have accidentally knoced over a cup while searching for its food in the dark. The girls were relieved and went back to bed shortly.

Mr Bean goes to a Toy Shop by Jing Yi

The sun was shining brightly in the clear, azure sky. Mr Bean was going to a toy shop to buy toys. There were bicycles, balls, dolls and many more on display.

When Mr Bean went into the toy shop, he was pleased to see many colourful toys as well as collectibles.

Mr Bean espied a toy train moving on a train track and it made a clickety-clack sound. His eyes were transfixed on the fascinating toy train. He could not wait to buy it. It was in brilliant red colour with golden metal trimmings.

Mr Bean went over to the counter and requested for the new set of toy train from the salesman. The salesman took a set of new toy train for Mr Bean.

Mr Bean was smiling like a Cheshire cat when the salesman opened the box. "Wow," Mr Bean muttered under his breath. The toy train set must be expensive, he thought to himself.

The salesman showed the price tag to Mr Bean. He counted his money in his wallet. He could not afford it. Mr Bean felt dissapointed and walked home sadly.

"Phew" by Poo Jun Sui

One moonlit night, Amy and Annie were startled by a sound coming from the living room. They woke up and was curious to find out what had made that sound.

Amy jolted out of bed and got a baseball bat. Annie was frightened, so she just curled up in bed. Amy walked stealthily to the door. She then glued her ears to the door. She was puzzled by the sound that was coming from the other side of the door.

"Creeak.." Amy opened the door gently and peeked from the edge of the door. Annie was too afraid to stay in bed alone so she jumped out of bed and stood closely behind Amy. Both girls stood close to the door and peered at what was happening outside.

"Meow!" Suddenly, a stray cat leaped out of nowhere. "Phewww... It's just a cat!" Amy and Annie heaved a sigh of relief.

Future Literacy

Gone were the days where updates on holidays or personal life had to be snail-mailed via postcards or letters. Nowadays, even wedding invites are digitalised and sent through fibre optics (dial-up internet) or through radiowaves or 'white noise' (wireless internet) across seas to any part of the world.

The world has advanced through leaps and bounds. It has become so saturated that displacement has to take place. Hence, the displacement from the 'real' to the 'virtual'.

The picture above shows how learning is taking place in the virtual realm. Each avatar (a virtual person) represents an actual person in the real life.

Real: Who you really are in real life

Virtual: Your avatar identity (the role that you play)
Projective: To bring the real to the virtual. The 'self' you bring to the avatar.

Advantages of digital literacies in virtual online spaces? Plenty.
Students, especially young children learn better with pictures, animation, videos and audio. Since learning can take place in the virtual world, the boundaries are limitless. Ideas can be manifested and understood by other avatars while physical differences are not a hindrance for socialising as the avatars can be fat, thin, bald, white, black, brown, beautiful or good-looking. It's all up to the individual to choose the avatar that he/she wants to represent him/her. Children who feel inferior or shy may no longer feel afraid to share what they think and may express their ideas constructively and collaboratively.

However, like any good idea, there're always counter arguments and areas for improvement. In my opinion, learning in virtual online spaces can only be used effectively when coupled with real experiential learning.

Afterall, we need to know how much it hurts or bruise when we fall.
Subsequently, we need to feel to know the texture of a rabbit's fur or the pointy-ness of a durian.
"Experiences are what makes a man."

Happy Children's Day!

Dear young and old,

Happy Children's Day! All around the world there are children who are not with their family during this special day. We want to let them know that we do not forget about them and that there are people who care.
Let us all be those who care and let there be no children who are alone =)

Willy and Hugh - Anthony Browne

Recently we've read Willy and Hugh by Anthony Browne. The theme of this book is friendship. It is special to most of us because at one point or another in our lives, we've encountered a similar situation as Willy.
Through this book, we have learnt that two different individuals were able to overcome their differences and still became good friends.

Narrative point of view: Omniscient narrator
Plot: Progressive

Anthony Browne is such a lucid writer. His books are simple yet they strike the right note with the circle of life. I must also add that the imagery for his books is splendid. I also recommend, The Tunnel by Anthony Browne. The book is about two siblings who overcame their differences and were close siblings.

Term 3 Holiday Homework: Scrapbook

Dear all,
I will be uploading some of the scrapbooks done by P2-2 soon.
This holiday homework fosters parent-child relationship and provides children with autonomy to explore and do their own research on a topic of choice.
The project integrates English and Science knowledge.
